Oldest Bowling Club. The game of bowls in New Zealand is now in its eighty-second year, the first record of the game giving the credit to Auckland in 1860. the Auckland Club being the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was not until the opening of the Otago goldfields that the game gained ground in the South Island. In fact a northerner may be said to have started it down there. A Wellington merchant. Mr. George Turnbull, had imported, in 1861. a complete set of howls for a full rink. The lure of the goldfields called him and he opened a merchant's business in Dunedin a vear later, taking his howls with him The game gradually became established, and the Dunedin Club's gree- was onened in 1872. The influence *' the "■ame snread north tn Canterbury hut it was not until 1875 that the Christchurch Club was formed.
