ESSAY COMPETITION

CONVENT SCHOOLS’ SUCCESS The fact tiiat three Convent schools in Wanganui had “scooped the pool" by gaining the first three prizes in the recent essay competition, held in conjunction with the “Weapons From Waste” campaign, was greeted with prolonged applause when an announcement was made by Mr. C. R. White, town clerk, at the Irish national concert, in the Opera House on Tuesday night. The competition, open lo all primary schools, was conducted by the Wanganui Committee for the Reclamation of Waste Materials, of which Mr. White is honorary secretary, and entries were judged by a board ol headmasters. I An essay entitled “Waste Not Want Not," written by 12-year-okl Mary Travers, of St Joseph's School, Grey Street, was awarded first prize. The second award went to Eileen McMaster, aged 11 years, of the Holy Infancy School, Aramoho, while the third prize was won by Veronica Kaveney, of St. Anthony’s School, Gonville. ' Each winner received certificates as well as prizes of £1 for first. 10s for second, and 5s for third. Two other entries which were close in order of merit were those of Rosamond Berry (Aramoho School) and Elizabeth Maynard Marlow (Wanganui East School). The presentation of certificates lo the successful pupils was made by Mr. White during the concert interval.
