Giving evidence on his own behalf, Go' isbury handed in a statement setting out his conscientious beliefs. He said he would not take any part in v.not even non-combatant duty, hut would shelter and feed refugees, ss-examined by Mr. C. Wd. Clinkaid. Crown representative. Goldsbury said he could not help defend New Zealand. If his own house were attacked he considered he was entitled to defend himself, provided that in so doing he did not violate the laws of God. In reply to the chairman, Mr. E. !I. Young (Stratford), Goldsbur* said he had belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses for nine and a-half years. E. T. James, appealing for Goldsbury as an employee, said the farm was 10 miles from Kai Iwi and had an area of 2800 acres. 1000 acres of which wore in bush. It carried 2000 sheep and 150 cattle in winter. Goldsbury was the only labour on the farm besides witness and was an expert shearer. In reply to Mr. Clinkard, James
said there was no slack period in this type of country. In addition to seasonal work there was always fencing, scrub-cutting and track-making.
