BOMBS FOR BOMBERS"

NATIONAL SAVINGS CAMPAIGN NEXT W EEK’S ARRANGEMENTS. A Dominion-wide drive for National I Savings to be known as “Bombs for 1 Bombers” week, will be launched next week, commencing on Monday, March 23. Preliminary discussions took place some time ago, but to suit the convenience of the armed forces, decision of the date of commencement was postponed. The idea of the drive is to combine a “Bombs for Bombers” week with a morale week, on the same lines as the weapons and ship drive recently held in Britain, asking of everyone resolution and determination to work, save and assist to the utmost to help the war effort. The Wanganui National Savings Committee have arrangements in hand for an Army and Air Force display in the city during the drive next week, and details will be announced later. It is hoped to arrange flights of bombers or other planes over the city while Army parades are being held. The official opening ceremony will be held in Wellington on Monday, commencing at 12.30 p.m. in conjunctio with a military parade. After a few introductory remarks an R.N.Z.A.F. sergeant-pilot who holds the Distinguished Flying Medal will declare the week officially open. The whole of this ceremony will be broadcast by all National and Com-. mercial stations. This is to be rebroadcast in Wanganui by the use of! loud-speakers, after which the Mayor, | Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., will officially open the Wanganui campaign. I ( The happenings in the Near East I jhave at last brought home to New i Zealand the necessity for strengthen-1

ling the home front. Activities in this direction are developing rapidly, and make savings doubly important. The I fact that fewer civilians remain to ! meet the need of maintaining larger : armed forces and that an increasingly I smaller supply of goods is available I for civilian purposes, provides sufficient reason for a special effort on the part of civilians. It is the duty of everyone to buy at least one bond during “Bonds for Bombers" week. The Wanganui National Savings Committee, at a meeting yesterday, received advice that the Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force will visit Wanganui during the campaign. The hand will arrive on the night o' March 31 and leave on April 2. Street parades hy the band will be a feature of its programme together with a night concert. Arrangements are being made for bonds of fl denomination to be on sale at selected points other than post office and bank counters. Every bond sold during the special campaign period is to have affixed a sticker bearing the words “Bomber Bond." Mrs. J. G. Denniston and Miss F. Sampson were appointed to look after the publicity part of the campaign as far as posters, etc. are concerned, with the co-operation of the W.W.S.A. and Air Training Corps. Special shop window displays are being arranged and all business firms are to be asked to feature the special posters. Those present at the meeting were: Messr. A. R. Donaldson (chairman), D. R. McCowatt. R. G. Taiboys, W. G. Gilberd. T. N. Dickson and G. Bennett, Mrs. J. G. Denniston. Miss F. Sampson and Mr. J. Gillick (organiser).
