I and expenditure being £195 16s 7d, I with a net profit, of £59 13s 5d kept in ; hand lor tne benefit of men in the ’ armed forces. , FARMERS LN HOME GUARD. i At an E.P.S. meeting at Taihape, ..A-. james mentioned that he nad been approached by Mr. D. G. Gordon asking if the E.P.S. was maxing any preparations lor providing assistance on \arms to replace men who might be called up in the Home Guard. At first he had thought that the E.P.S. was not concerned, out on considering the matter he was convinced it was. Some organising should 0e undertaken, particularly in the dairying districts, and he asked the county representatives Lor their views. Mr. Deacon stated that in his riding there would not be a single man left, ms area contained many uairy farmers and these could not be released from the Home Guard except oy appeal to the Manpower Committee. Mr. V. Smith said that many in his district had been rejected ny the Home Guard on account of age or unlitness, and it would not be difficult to get these men to help on farms. Mr. Doole stated that Mr. Smith voiced his opinion; anyone in Class 3 would have no difficulty in getting his discharge. Mr. Parsons proposed that the county wardens make a survey and find out wnat help would be required. The names o; the 200 country members of the E.P.S. are to be handed to them lor this purpose. DEATH OF MR. ROBERT SPENCE. The death occurred at Taihape on Saturday morning, of Mr. Robert Spence, who was born in CountyAntrim, Northern Ireland, in 1812. He served in the Great War with the Royal Irish Rilles, and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 2i years. He was employed as a bleacher by a linen weaving company at Woodburn, Car-rick-Fergus, Ireland. He came to New Zealand about 15 years ago and finally settled in Taihape, where he had many friends. Mr. Spence is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son. SOLDIERS’ PARCELS.
