The New York Times’ Washington correspondent says President Roose- . velt is reported to be readv to com- . mandeer The strike-bound Toledo Peoria anu Western Railroad unless the railroad’s president heeds Presi- > dent Roosevelt’s personal appeal to comply with a National War Labour , Board order requiring arbitration in a wage dispute. President Roosevelt is insistent that ’ the national agreement between industry and labour, banning strikes and lockouts for the duration, must be obeyed bv both employers and employees According to War Labour Board officials. Mr. George McNenr the railroad’s president has been defying the United States Government since 27. when the board directed arbitration in the dispute. Therefore officials regard Ih<» case as very impor'ant. since, if McNeai successfullv defiies the board, it is | believed that, its effectiveness in nre-' serving labour peace will be ended.
