ESSEN RAIDED
HEAVY R.A.F. BOMB-LOAD OTHER OBJECTIVES AI,SO ATTACKED. Rugby. March 9. An Air Ministry communique 1 states:-"Last night R.A.F. bombers heavily attacked Essen and other ' objectives in the industrial districts of the Ruhr. Enemy airfields in Hol--1 land and the docks at Ostend and j Havre were also bombed. Fighter aircraft attacked enemy airfields in Holland and northern '"rance. Eight 1 of our bombers are missing." In the attack on Essen and the Ruhr a very heavy load of bombs was ; dropped in the heart of Germany’s ’ greatest industrial concentration. I states an Air Ministry bulletin. Our ‘ crews, on their return, described how [ effectively fires were started. Toward the <■#! of the attack thegrews ’ saw many large fires, which' appeared to be spreading. The crew of one Wellington counted 22 fires, all of i which were big, as well as many 1 others. Bombs burst in and among the fires with devastating effect. It is stated in London that yesterday's daylight bombing operations over France were carried out by American-built Douglas Bostons which are now coming into service j with the Bomber Command. It will .' be remembered that aircraft of this ; type for some time have been doing ; excellent work with the Fighter Comj mand. where thev are known as 1 Havocs.-B OW.
