ADEQUATE FIRE ESCAPES
HOTEL REQUIREMENTS POSITION AT AUCKLAND. (P.A.) Auckland, March 5. “So far as the committee is concerned the matter of fire escapes is not obscure,” said Mr. J. 11. Luxford. S.M., at. a sitting of the Licensing Commit tee when the oliicer in charge of the Labour Department wrote concerning the maintenance and provision of escapes following the fall recently of a painter from an hotel. “The committee insists,” added Mr. Luxford. “that, adequate fire escapes shall be provided in all licensed premises and that, they shall be maintained in good order and condition. If the city by-laws do not meet th* position the committee lays down its own standard. There must be adequate provision. “Now that the matter has been brought forward the police will he directed to make a thorough examination of all licensed premises ana report at the annual meeting of the - ommittee. In oider to make it full the police should be assisted by the ng. Il the report shows that any licensed premises are not adequately provided with escapes there will be no renewal of the licence.”
