FOOD FOR GREECE
SAFE CONDUCT GRANTED CONCESSION BY ITALY Rugby, March 3. Sale conduct has now oeen granted by the Italian authorities for a ship chartered by the Swedish Red Cross to convey commodities to Greece. The Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Warfare, Mr. Dingle Foot, announcing this in the House of Commons, sain it had been necessary to obtain clarification of the Italian requirements on certain points and details, but there was no reason to think that this would lead to any delay. Mr. Foot added that by the agreement with the Greek Government the British Government had financed the chartering by the Swedish Red Cross of a vessel about 400 to 500 tons to help in carrying relief to the Greeks in Greece, fie hoped to be in a position shortly to make a statement regarding the composition and origin of her cargo. Goods so far shipped from Turkey under the auspices of the Greek Government, he said, had consisted chiefly of beans, split peas, potatoes, onions, fish, and eggs. They had been ' paid for parti) by the Greek Gov- j eminent and partly by American ! subscribers. The extent lo whicii I shipments could be continued de- I pended upon Turkey's ability to >upply food He was confident that the Turkish Government, whose atti- I tude throughout had been most gen- | erous and sympathetic, would do | everything in its power lo avoid in- I terruption. As regards distribution of food- ! stuffs upon arrival, no further guai-j antees have been received. 8.0.W. :
