VOLUNTEERS WANTED
SHELTER TRENCHES IN WANGANUI YYOKK Pt SHED AHEAD. "A comprehensive scheme will have to be worked out so that the rijyfit people go to the right trenches in an emergency," said the city engineer. Mr. L. F. Row. when reporting last night on the progress made with the digging of shelter trenches in Wanganui. Mr. Row who is in charge of the E.P.S. Works Section, told members of the Executive Committee at the special meeting that a survey was being made of the population normally working in the city areas adjacent tn where the trenches were being provided. The work was being pushed ahead with all possible haste, and a call had been made by the Wanganui City Council for 200 able-bodied men to volunteer their services. If the men reported outside the Council Chambers at 8.30 a m. to-mor-row (Saturday) their assistance in digging the trenches would be greatly appreciated. The work would be organised bj the E.P.S. Works Section. Mr. Row suggested that it might be a good idea to have practice drill in conjunction with the alarm system. In this way people in the business area would have a better idea of the location of the trenches. The National Service Department had stimulated that the maximum number of people in any trench should not exceed 50. but in Wanganui the accommodation in any one bay was being limited to 20 or 25. Trenches being provided in Wanmild give good protection from bomb blast and splinters. In England cove;e:l tranches were now considered a menace and in many cases were being abandoned.
