BOWLING TOURNEY
CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELLED DECISION AT DUNEDIN (Press Assn.) Dunedin, Dec. 16. The 1942 championship bowling tournament, whiuh was scheduled to commence al Dunedin on January 7 and for which record entries have been received, has been cancelled. The president of the New Zealand Bowling Association. Mr. J. Forster, said to-day that the linal decision had been postponed as long as possible until the Governments wishes in the present national emergency had become known. The executive of the council had resolved a few days ago that nothing should be done to embarrass thr Government in the present crisis, despite the loss of a substantial sum which the tournament would havp brought for patriotic purposes and the inevitable disappointment of a large number of visiting howlers from all parts of New Zealand and of their Dunedin hosts. Now that more definite information regarding the situation had become apparent the council's course of action became clear. The ultimate decision was confirmed hy a telegraphic vote of memhets of the council throughout New Zealand.
Asked to suggest what procedure would be adopted regarding the refund of entry fees, the Venue of lhe next possible tournament and the future conduct of tlie counefi’s >siness. Mr Fursts stated that the executive would submit recommendations to ouncil members at an early date. In the meantime he agreed witfli the Minister of Internal Affairs that a local centre tournament, involving little or no travelling, should be encouraged rather than discontinued, and further expressed the hope that
boxxlers of New Zealand xvould put their full xxeight hethind the war effort In whatever capacity each was best fitted to serve.
