DEATH OF PRESIDENT OF MARTON JOCKEY CLUB MR. H. J. D. McM-ANAWAY The death, in a private hospital at Wellington yesterday, of Mr. H. J. D. Mi .Manaway, president of the Marton Jockey Club, removes one of the outstanding personalities of the Rangitikei district. Two months ago, in October. Mr. McManaway was entertained by members of the committee of the Marton Jockey Club on the occasion of his 71st birthday. Paying a tribute to Mr McManaway s services to racing. Mr J. R. L. Stanford, vice-chairman of the executive, said that Mr. McManaway had been of the greatest help to racing in New Zealand. For 30 years he had been a member of the Marton Jockey Club, having been elected a member in 1911. It was 21 years since he had been elected as steward and for the past eight years he had been president of the club. Mr. McManaway had been instrumental in helping to improve the finances of the club. He had been representative of the countrv clubs on the Wanganui District Committee, and he was one of the country cluhs’ delegates to the New Zealand Racing Conference, and for many years he vvas chairman of the Judicial Committee of the Marton Jockey Club. Mr. McManaway owned and raced horses for many years, one of the first being that good performer North East Later he raced the Thespian Cow I mare H-b t with a good deal of success. and from her he got two useful horses in Black Robe and Soutane For a couple of months nast Mr. McManaway had been in 111-health but il had only been during the past month that his illness had taken a serious turn He is survived by h-> wifi- and .a family of one daughter and throe sons, two of whom are on .active serva-o with the N.Z.E.F.
