ROUND THE GREENS

WANGANUI BOWLING ACTIVITIES NOTES AND COMMENTS. Up till yesterday afternoon only 18 teams had entered for the Wanganui Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament. As entries were not due to close until 10 o'clock last night it :s expected that the number will be greatly augmented. A Castlecliff Club rink now holds the Keesing Cup, having won it fro*.-. Wanganui Club recently. • • • • The fourth round of the Cosmopolitan Club's full rink competition will be played on Saturday. The draw for the second round of the pairs and singles competitions was posted last week and members are urged to finalise these games as soon as posI sible. I There are numerous other centre ■ tournaments in the offing, notably I during Christmas holidays, at North 1 Auckland. Auckland. Wellington , South Canterbury and Buller, while New Year has been chosen by South I Auckland. Bay of Plenty. Gisborne. • Wairarapa, Taranaki. Manawatu. Wellington and Southland. If the recent spell of fine weather holds until after the holidays the greens for the Christmas tournament will be in great order. Congratulations are extended to the Wanganui East rink which was successful in lifting the Hum Cup from St. John's (holders) this week. i Auckland Singles Title. The well-known Canton player G. A. Deare added another win to his long string of victories by taking the open singles title of the( Auckland Bowling Centre on the Carlton green last week, his opponent being another Carlton Club representative. L. G. Donaldson. The finalists met twice :o decide the issue. Deare s defeat rn the first meeting did not eliminate him, as he held two lives to Donaldson's one. and another game was necessary. Prior to meeting Donaiuson, Deare met Livingstone in two successive games, winning them both. Livingstone was not up to the form he displayed on the preceding day. The elimination of Livingstone narrowed the field to Deare and Donaldson, the latter having defeated Tyndall in the sixth round. In the second meeting between Deare and Donaldson the drawing powers of the two players were exhibited to the full. However, both failed badly when attempting 1 shots faster than a draw. Especially was this so in Donaldson's ua<| his • running shots being very poorh exr- 1

outed. Had he been in any way successful in these shots he might #isliy have won. Deare did not at tempi many run shots. He was successful m only one effort at a vital stage, as Donaldson was rapidly overtaking him. He was 4 down on the 12tn. head, when he drove at the bunch with its last bow l, which w as fortunate enough to lie the shot. St. John's Club Notes.
