CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
HOURS OF CLOSING FOR WANGANUI TWO LONG WEEK-ENDS Wanganui retailer.*! have decided tn close their premises for f our days in Christmas and New Year weeks, thus giving employees two long week-ends. By an agreement with the Shop A.‘^istants’ Union, it was stated yesterday, all retail shops in Wanganui governed hy the Retail Shop Assistants’ Award, and the Grocers’ Assistants’ and Drivers' Award will he closed on Thursday. Friday, an I Saturday in both Christmas and Year weeks respectively. During Christmas and New Year weeks, however, the shops will remain epen till 6 p.m. on the Monday and Tuesda\ of each week without extra payment to the staffs. The closing hour for shops on Christmas and New Year’s Eve is V' p.m.. but members of the Wanganu Drapers. Clothiers. Furnishers, an 1 Boot Retailers’ Association have decided to dose at 9 p.m. on New Year'.' Eve. Grocers may do likewise.
Wanganui butchers and pork butchers have also agreed to close on Saturday December 27. and Saturda.v January 3. but employees will Star* work at 6 am on the Wednesda\ in each of the«e weeks, and if required will work ore hour on each of th<* Saturday mvnings without the payment of overtime.
Similar holiday arrangements during Christmas and New Year week*! have been adopted by all the principal centres of New Zealand. It wa« also stated in Wanganui yesterday that individual notice, in writing, must be given to the Labour Department of the change o f the la» night from Friday to Wednesday in Christmas and New Year weeks
