GIFT OF £10,000
CANTERBURY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF LORD RUTHERFORD (Press Assn.) Christchurch, Sept. 29. A gift of fIO.OOO to establish a science scholarship in memory of Lord Rutherford has been made to the Canterbury University College by Mr. Arthur Sims, of Christchurch and London. Mr. Sims, like Lord ' Rutherford, was a graduate of Can- I terbury College. Mr. Sims’ gift, notice of which was i received by the College Council at ; its meeting to-day. doubles the amount of a previous offer of £5OOO I three years ago- In March. 1925. Mr. 1 Sims had offered the college £5OOO towards a fund for a research scholarship in memory of Lord Rutherford. said Mr. C. T. Aschman. It had j been Mr. Sims’ hope at that time that i the Government of New Zealand j would supply another £5OOO, making a total endowment of £lO.OOO. “Three years have gone by and no- • thii has eventuated from the Gov- I eminent, so Mr. Sims has taken it on . himself to find the whole £10,000.” Mr. Aschman added. “There is no need for me to add any explanation of what such a very handsome gift means to us at Canterbury College, where Lord Rutherford did his first work. This gift from Mr. Sims will come as a very fine means of perpetuating the memory of perhaps one of the greatest men New Zealand has ever turned out.”
