FARM WORKER MISSING
BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN DROWNED HORSE AND CLOTHING FOUND IN DEEP WATER A farm worker. John Gordon Vicker. 17 years of age, is presumed to have been drowned on Friday last while crossing a flooded stream, near Rananui, in the Raetih.l district. Vicker was employed by his brother-in-law, Mr. William Reeve, on a farm at Rananui, and was reported missing on Saturday. Leaving the farm on Friday, on horseback accompanied by six dogs. Vicker went to visit a friend 3J miles away. He had to cross a stream at Tangahoe, which was in flood, and near where he would have to cross is a waterfall 50 feet high. When he did not arrive at his friend's farm the police were communicated with.
Constables S. N. Cave (Ohakune) and J. H. Beaton (Raetihi) visited the scene and found the missing man’s horse stranded on a ledge below the fall. There was no sign of the dogs. Vicker’s saddle, trousers and overcoat were found in deep water, but there was no trace of the missing man.
