CUBS' BOTTLE DRIVE

GOOD COLLECTION IN GONVILLE HARVEST OF NEARLY 400 DOZEN Completing a bottle "drive" in the Gonville district which had been commenced a fortnight earlier, Gonville, Wanganui East and Moana Baptist Cubs on Saturday were rewarded with a collection of nearly 4000 bottles. Some of these have already been disposed of. the proceeds being divided, one-third going to the Cubs’ funds and two-thirds to the patriotic funds in Wanganui. In spite of the unfavourable weather on Saturday morning 2C Cubs reported for duty and worked hard bringing the bottles in their handcarts to the various ''dumps” established at convenient centres, From the dumps the bottles were conveyed to the central sorting depot in a gig belonging to Mrs. H. E. B. Newton and drawn by the well-known horse “Wendy.” At the central depot some 150 dozen were sorted and many coffee and sauce bottles were washed, as clean bottles realise twice the price of those which are dirty. Large medicine bottles were also washed and found a ready sale, but the shop which serves as a depot still has more than 200 bottles stacked in it. These will be sorted during the week. A “drive” throughout the area between Victoria Avenue and Somme Parade is planned for next Saturday week. October 11. and should the weather prove fine it is anticipated that the records established at Wanganui East and Gonville will be improved on. “We are prepared to collect all kinds of bottles, and do not refuse any,” remarked Miss Dawn Weston, in charge of the Moana Baptist pack, who was one of the organisers of Saturday's drive. She pointed out that there was. however, little demand for very small medicine bottles.
