ARMY DAY HELD DISPLAY OF SOUVENIRS The September meeting of the For dell Women’s Institute was “Army Day,” in tribute to the soldiers and nurses with the forces. There was a good attendance, presided over by Mrs, S. E. Lloyd, wno welcomed members and visitors. An apology was received from Mrs. K. L. Bi uce, president. Lilies, camellias and spring flowers comprised the tloial decorations, and the president's table was ventre., by a vase arranged in red, white atlu blue shades. The meeting opened with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem, and Miss Fiyger read the motto, "He tiiat is tliy liiend indeed will help thee in thy need." Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to a valued member, the late Mrs. Anderson, and in sympathy with her relatives and those of the late Corporal Hunter. General business was dealt with, the secretarial duties oenig carried out o; Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Power, and the general financial statement presenter, by Mrs. Duncan, and that of tile emergency fund by Mrs. Lloyd. The names of thirty-seven soldier., and one nurse from the district, who are serving overseas, were reao, anu best wishes for their safety were ex pressed. Several letters were read from Fordell boys, expressing thanks for parcels received. Mrs. Duncan and Miss Henderson were appointed delegates to the hallyearly council meeting. It was decided to send a monetary gift in response to the Makogai Christmas appeal. A letter expressing thanks tor tins of gingernuts received from the institute, and which have been sent to AirForce boys, was received from Mrs. Millen, president of Air Force Relations Committee. The Golden Thread, "Items of interest from Home and Country," was given by Mrs. Bryant, who read a letter from a soldier describing Cairo and other places ol interest. The exhibition of "Army souvenirs” was of great interest, and included handsome rugs and silk tapestries, ebony and viory elephant book-ends, Egyptian fez, mother-of-pearl plaque and prayer book, bronze, crystal and other treasures. ’ Members listened with interst to items and incidents from soldiers’ letters, read by various members, and to experiences related in letters from two Air Force boys, one of whom described the reception of a party of Air Force members by the Queen and Princess in the Pink Room at the Palace.

Many gifts of tins of fruit cake were received from members and these will be included in the 40 Christmas parcels which are to be sent to Fordell members of the lignting services overseas. Nine parcels have also been sent through the Patriotic Council. The special competition, "Best message and joke for soldiers' parcel,” is being judged and the results will be given at tne ne#t meeting. Miss J. Lloyd arranged a word-building competitii i for members' entertainment, the w.nner being Mrs. D. McKay. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames R. Stewarr, Carroll, Power and Downey. The monthly competitions resulted: Best piece of faggoting, Miss J. Lloyd 1, Mrs. R. Campbell 2; three narcissi, Mrs. H. Campbell 1, Mrs. R. Campbell 2, Mrs. C. Fiyger 3. The judges were Mesdames Rowan and Bryant, sent. The October meeting will be "Red Cross Day,” and the competitions will be: (1) Neatest and quickest rolled bandage; (2) three spring blooms, one variety. The gift will be a facecloth an piece of old sheeting suitable for bandage.
