Mr. R. W. Watson, S.M., of Feilding. will resign from the Bench as from January 22, 1942, states a Gazette notice.

Mr. J. W. Beanland, chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board, will leave shortly on a visit of several months to Australia.

Mr. H. W. Oliver, who has been manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Akaroa for 12 years, will retire shortly. His successor is Mr. Bryant, Waipukurau.

The Mayor of Wanganui, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., the town clerk (Mr. C. R. White), and Cr. T. S. Russell are visiting Wellington on City Council business. They are expected back today.

Mr. A. B. Gibbons, Wellington, was appointed president of the New Zealand Motor Trade Federation, and Mr. H. Anderson, Wellington, vicepresident, at the annual meeting of the federation in Wellington on Thursday.

Mr. Arthur Scott Brook, a New Zealander, who for many years was city organist of Atlantic City, United States, and who retired at the age of 70 three years ago from that position, has accepted a postion with an Atlantic City church, All Saints. Mr. Erook is now actively engaged on the Gracie Fields Benefit Committee of the British War Relief Society, of which in Atlantic County he is chairman of the music committee.

Mr. Conrad W. Hamann, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hamann, Fendalton, Christchurch, has been elected a member of the council of the Institution of Structural Engineers, London. Mr. Hamann, who is a graduate of Canterbury University College, and was subsequently associated in business with Mr. R. A. Campbell in Christchurch, is now stationed in Birmingham as senior technical adviser to the National Air Raid Precautions organisation.

Major A. E. Coekerill, D. 5.0., who recently returned for Egypt, and has been appointed to the senior staff of the new command and staff school which has been established at Waiouru, served with the Otago Regiment throughout the last war. He was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant in 1917 and to full lieutenant in the following year. -He was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the D. 5.0., and on his return to New Zealand he joined the New Zealand Staff Corps.

Mr. T. Clark, supervisor ol the mailroom, Wanganui Chief Post Office, was met by colleagues of the various branches yesterday afternoon on the eve of his retirement on superannuation after 40 years' service with the department. Presenting Mr. Clark with a fireside chair on behalf of the staff, the chief postmaster, Mr. D. R. McCowatt, paid a tribute to his many good qualities. Other speakers were Messrs. F. C. Gentry (engineers' branch), W. R. Hudson (postal branch) and H. J. Sanders (moneyorder branch). Suitably acknowledging the gift and the sentiments which accompanied it. Mr. Clark spoke in reminiscent vein of his experiences since he joined the department at Waitotara, since when he has served at Wanganui, Wellington, Invercargill, Dunedin and at Wanganui again.
