Captain A. C. Trousdale, who is attached to an Auckland battalion in the Expeditionary Force, has been promoted major.

Colonel W. G. Stevens, C.8.E., Royal New Zealand Artillery, who is serving overseas with the Expeditionary Force, has been promoted to brigadier.

Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., who is confined to his home in Wanganui through indisposition, will be unable to conduct, the business of the Hawera Magistrate's Court to-day.

Mr. R. Richardson, former member of the Waitolara County Council, was the subject of a motion of sympathy in the death of his mother at the monthly meeting of tlie council yesterday.

Miss Trevor Hunter, of Wanganui, has been selected to go to England to undergo a test as an applicant for a position in the Royal Air Force Transport Auxiliary. She is at present visiting her relatives, who live in the South Island and Hawke’s Bay.

Mr. H. R. Dix, who died in Auckland last week, was a brother of Mr. T. R. Dix, engineer-clerk to the Waitotara County Council, who was granted extended leave at the monthly meeting of the council yesterday, after a vote of sympathy had been passed.

The death has occurred of Mr. John Finlayson, of Kiripaka, at the age of 76 years. Mr. Finlayson, who was born in the Whangarei district, took up land at Kiripaka 45 years ago, and has farmed the property ever since. He was one of the oldest settlers in the district. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Mr. Frank Milner is to resign from the position of rector of the Waitaki Boys' High School from the end of this year and his resignation has been accepted with regret by the Waitaki High School Board of Governors. Mr. Milner, who has been rector of the school since 1906, will stand as the National candidate for Oamaru at the coming general election.

Mr. J. Morrison, who died recently, was referred to by councillors at the monthly meeting of the Waitolara County Council yesterday and a motion of sympathy with the chairman, Mr. W. Morrison, his brother, was carried. Reference was made to the services Mr. G. Morrison had given to the Wanganui Harbour Board and the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Power Board.

Driver Harold Patrick Rumney, a Wanganui man of the Second N.Z.E.F., who was recently reported killed in action, is now officially reported wounded and missing. A son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Rumney, Boydlield Street, Wanganui East, Driver Rumney was reported killed in June. He was once employed by the Public Works Department in Wanganui and later joined the Commercial Broadcasting Service in Wellington.

The death occurred at Auckland on Saturday of Mrs. Ruth Buckley, aged 68, of Market Road, Epsom, wife of Captain George Buckley, V.D., bandmaster of the Papakura Camp Band. Formerly Miss Signal, of Wanganui, Mrs. Buckley was well known in musical circles and took an active part in church work. She is survived by her husband and two sons, both of whom are on active service. One, WingCommander R. G. R. Buckley, Royal Air Force, is in England, and the other, Pilot-Officer J. Buckley, who until shortly before the outbreak of the war was studying music at the Leipsig Conservatorium, is also in the Royal Air Force. A nephew, GroupCaptain M. W. Buckley, Royal New Zealand Air Force, is serving in England in charge of an aerodrome.

Mr. W. Easton, who has retired from the position of general manager of the Otago Daily Times and Witness Company, was recently met by members ot the various departments of the company. A presentation, which consisted of a handsome salver, suitably inscribed, was made by Mr. W. R. Sinclair, the newly-appointed general manager, who expressed the hope that Mr. Easton would be long spared to enjoy his well-earned retirement. Sir James Hutchison spoke of Mr. Easton’s long service with the company, extending over 50 years, and his whole-hearted interest in its welfare. Mr. Easton expressed appreciation of the gift and the kindly spirit which had prompted it, and also for the associating of Mrs. Easton with the ceremony.
