BIG LOTTERY PRIZE

TICKET HELD IN NEW PLYMOUTH IDENTITY OF HOLDER A SECRET. Nev. Plymouth, Aug. 9. A licKet held at New Plymouth bearing the number 45,729, has won a prize of £lO.OOO in an Australian lotYesterday, advice was received by a person who had made arrangements to receive early advice of the. results of the drawing that a New Plymouth ticket bearing the notn de plume of "Social Security” had won the first prize. This information came by air mail, but the holder of the ticket is unlikely to be communicated with other than by ordinary mail. As soon as the selling agent learned of the result he advised his client, who pledged him to secrecy, at least until the prize money came to hand. Though the seller will not reveal the man’s name, the winner is believed to be a well-known middle-aged working man of New Plymouth who is considered to be one who would not be swept off his feet by such good fortune. Two other New Plymouth | ticket holders in the same lottery had i tickets bearing numbers only 1 and j 2 removed from the winning ticket. A peculiar coincidence in connection with the sale of the ticket cost the seller his chance of taking the lirst prize. It is the practice of this particular seller to purchase the 13th. ticket after commencing sales for each lottery, 13 being his lucky number. This time he failed to do so and it was the 13th. ticket that won. It is not expected that official confirmation of his good fortune will be received by the winner for some days. It was learned last night that advice had not been received by other prize-winners. The person who arranged for the early advice noticed the name of a woman friend as having won a £5 prize, and when he telephoned her last night, she was unaware of the fact. The lottery was drawn at 8.30 a.m. last Monday, and the air mail advice was postmarked 8.30 p.m. of the same day. j The only other New Zealand parI ticipant to win a substantial sum was | “Power Syn.” Gisborne, that ticket I drawing fifth prize of £750.
