OBITUARY THE LATE WILLIAM JACKSON The funeral of the late Mr. William Jackson took place at Mount View I Cemetery, Marton, on Friday after-1 noon. Prior to leaving the residence at Ngareta Street, the Rev. T. H. Burton conducted an impressive service and also read the burial service at the graveside. The number of beautiful floral tributes and messages of sympathy received testified to the high esteem in which Mr. Jackson was held in the district, and included wreaths from the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Loyal Marton Lodge. Marton Sash and Door Co., president, Rangitikei branch of the New Zealand National Party’, and members of the family. The pall-bearers were Messrs. William and John Jackson (sons). J. Jackson and P. J. Fogarty (sons-in-law). J. Oldfield and W. Clingberg. RATA OLD-TIMERS’ DANCE The Rata old-timers' dance in the Rata Coronation Hall on Thursday evening last was one of the best dances of the season. The music supplied by Goile's Orchestra, was of ifieir usual high standard and the oldime dances were appreciated by young and old alike. The lancers and d’Alberts found the lioor filled with dancers who could lit nee them and those willing to learn. Th’.e were visitors from Marton, Rr.ra, Turakina and Rangiwahia. Just before supper. Mr. A. H. Rhodes, on behalf of the Raia Tennis Club, presented the trophies won during the past season. Supper was dispensed by the ladies I and a willing band of helpers. Extrai were played by’ Mrs. and Miss Werata, 1 Mrs. L. Green and Tabu Potaka. A> competition was won by Mr. N. Signal and one conducted by the Patriotic! Societv was won bv Mr. C. C. McDonald. of Marton. The M.C.’s for the evening were Messrs. S. Signal. G. Gray and P. Smith. VIOLA BARKER SCHOOL OF DAM ING A reminder is given of the ballroom practice class which is being held on Tuesday evenings at 8 o'clock. The class is a popular one and the porgramme is comprehensive, embracing a variety of ballroom dances. Particulars may be obtained from Miss Barker. Other classes and private lessons by arrangement, also special “Keen Fit” classes. FIRE BRIGADE PATRIOTIC EUCHRE There wore 54 players at the Marton Fire Brigade's patriotic euchre tourney on Saturday evening, when the prize-winners were Mrs. E. Sayers and Mr. A. Govenlock. Miss K. Maike and Mr. J. Hawkins won the consolation prizes. The prize-winners generously gave their prizes back for patriotic purposes. Next Saturday' the fire brigade will commence a new series for aggregate prizes, starting at 7.45 p.m. WOMEN’S WAR SERVICE AUXILIARY After receiving tuition from Mr. R. L. Gill, four members of the women’s section of the Women's War Service Auxiliary came up for examination before Mr. M. J. Hartigan last week for their transport licences. After a severe test, Mrs. E. Fogelberg. Mrs. R. J. Callan. Miss H. Bayley and Miss Awdry were successful in obtaining their heavy transport licences. MARTON GOLF CLUB On the Marton golf links on Saturday. B. Cochran returned the best card in a stroke competition with a score of 81-10-71; H. W. Collier, 88-15-73; F. J. Christensen, 79-6-73; H. C. Collier, 93-20-73. tied for second place, and F. J. Christensen eventually proved the runner-up.
