APOLOGY ACCEPTED

BOMBING OF U.S. GUABOAT INCIDENT NOW CLOSED London, Aug. 1. It. was stated to-day by the United States Assistant-Secretary of S.ate, Mr. Sumner Welles, that Japan's apology for bombing the United Slates gunboat Tutuila, during an air raid on Chungking, had been accepted. Admiral K. Nomura, Japanese Ambassador to the United States, said that he was doing his best ?o maintain good relations between the two countries. The bombing was accidental. Mr. Sumner Welles said that the incident could now be regarded as closed.

(Recd. 11 p.m.) Washington. Aug. 1. Mr. Welles announced that Japan has promised an investigation and full indemnities for the bombing of the Tutuila. Admiral Nomura expressed official regrets and assured that, all precautions will be taken against a repetition.—U.P.A.
