ECONOMIC DEFENCE BOARD
CREATION IN U.S.A. TIGHTENING UP OF WAR AGAINST AXIS (Recd. 7.-15 p.m.) Washington July 31. President Roosevelt has created an Economic Defence Board, headed by the Vice-President, Mr. H. A. Wallace, to direct economic defence activities. This is regarded as a step to tighten up the economic war against the Axis. It is believed the board will maintain contact with the British Economic Ministry. The board members include Mr. Cordell Hull (Secretary of State), Mr. Henry Morgenthau (Secretary to the Treasury), Mr. H. L. Stimson (Secretary for War). Colonel Frank Knox (Secretary for the Navy), Mr. Jesse Jones (Secretary of Commerce) and Mr. Francis Biddle (Solicitor-General). The board will advise the President on measures to be taken to co-ordin-ate the policies and actions of various departments and agencies, and develop integrated economic defence plans, and insure the execution of them. Mr. Roosevelt has nominated Mr. Lincoln Macfeagh as Minister in Iceland. The Senate has approved of the appointments of Senator T. Connally (Texas) as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, succeeding Senator W. F. George (Georgia), who has become chairman of the Finance Committee.—U.P.A.
