PIPE BAND AFFAIRS
SATISFACTORY PROGRESS ANNUAL MEETING HELD A credit balance o! 1211 19s 7d, which enabled the band to wipe out last year’s deficit of £l5O 6s, was disclosed at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band last night, and keen satisfaction was ex pressed at the result of the year's operations. During the year, stated the annual report, the provincial contest arranged for Napier had to be abandoned, but the band attended the Waimarino Show at Raetihi, the Caledonian sports at Turakina, and the Christmas Eve celebrations at Waverley. The band had also assisted a number of local bodies as well as the Home Guard, and had paraded for six municipal concerts. The satisfactory result of some 60 parades had been that the band received generous support in all their functions. The revival of the Caledonian sports on Cook's Gardens on Anniversary Day had proved satisfactory, and the band, with other bands, had also benefited from the Wanganui marching championships, held under the auspices of the Wanganui Marching Association. Thirteen bands had pariicipated in the combined Band Sunday on Cook's Gardens on Easter Sunday, and this had also proved successful in spite ol heavy rain. Appreciative reference was also made to the services of PipeMajor E. C. Morgan and Pipe-Ser-geant T. Mulcahy as tutors in practices, and to Mr. S. R. McCallum as honorary treasurer. The fortnightly dances in lhe Cadora Hall, which had been renovated and refurnished by members, had proved a satisfactory innovation, and generous financial support to the extent of nearly £5O had been forthcoming from genuine supporters. As a result of the year’s operations the band would start the new year with more than £l2O in hand, mainly as a result of members’ own efforts.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted amid applause, members expressing satisfaction at the splendid result under difficult conditions.
