HARRIER CHAMPIONS

NOTES ON SATURDAY’S KIN. The race lor the Wanganui Harrier Club championships last week was held over the trying Bramwell course, which was in a very muddy state after the recent rain. As was expected the senior title was won in convincing fashion by C. Cox, after a very line race in which the best of the local runners took part. Cox takes some time to get fit, as he is such a big man, but when he is properly tuned up he is one of the best harriers in New Zealand. Congratulations must be extended to Cox for running such a brilliant race. F. Kiddle again ran excellently and was going just as well at the finish as he was at the start. He was the only man to test Cox over the last two miles and was going .slightly better Ilian the winner at the finish. Kiddle has been the unlucky runner for the past three years. A. Bevege, A. Pcmberthy and 11. Hopper were well up at Ihe finish, after sticking together most of the way. The junior title went Io A. Weller, with E. Lett second and B. Pritchard third in a strong field. Weller appears to run much better with very little training. Although he was one of the youngest juniors in the field, Weller was easily the biggest, and as he is growing quickly, he would be well advised to have a good spell before the track season opens in November.

In running second to Weller, E. Lett performed creditably as he is not really a long-distance runner, whereas Weller shines mostly over these long trips. Next track season should see him winning some good races. Although he ran a great race on Saturday, Lott has run better on some previous occasions.

B. Pritchard ran a greatly-improved race for third and next year he should be running some very line races, if ho does not overdo it this season. He would probably have been a bit closer up on Saturday if he had not drifted a little at the start, although he .might not have beaten Weller or Lett. D. Greig and W. Wakeling ran best of the other juniors. PALMERSTON NORTH VISIT Members of the Wanganui Harrier Club will travel to Palmerston North to-morrow to compete against the Y.M.S.A. Harrier Club for the Lawrence Cup. Wanganui won the trophy last year and this year’s race should be an interesting one, as both clqbs are fairly even. Members are reminded that the bus will leave Martin and Vernon’s at 12.15 p.m.
