ITALIAN WARSHIPS ATTACKED

RAID ON PALERMO MIDDLE EAST R.A.F. IN ACTION (Rccd. 6.30 p.m.) Rugby, July 19Widespread attacks were carried out yesterday and last night without the loss of a single plane, according to an R.A.F. Middle East communique, which states: “R.A.F. lighters engaged two Junkers 88 which dropped bombs on Cyprus. One enemy aircraft was shot down over the sea.

“Heavy bombers carried out another successful attack on Sicily during the night of Thurs-day-Friday, the target being enemy cruisers and destroyers in Palermo harbour. Bombs were dropped °n, or near, enemy warships, but the full results could not be observed owing to smoke. Aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm bombed aerodromes at Gerbini and Augusta, also on the island of Sicily.

“In Cyrenaica night attacks were carried out on the port of Desna and at Bardia. Direct hits were made on the mole at Derna and a nmuber of fires started. One very large fire was followed by a vivid explosion which lit up the interior of the bomber three miles away. “From these operations all our aircraft returned safely.” It is officially stated in Cairo there was an air raid on Alexandria this morning. A few bombs were dropped. One person was killed and eleven injured. Slight damage was caused.— 8.0.W.
