RUGBY FOOTBALL EAST DEFEATS WEST Bright football was seen at the Oval Domain, Taihape, on Saturday, when country teams representing the East and West Queen candidates in the Patriotic Carnival met for the second time. The match resulted in a win for East by nine points to six. The high standard of play roused tlie spectators to entnusiasm, especially in the last ten minutes. For East tries were scored by E. Chase, Flaitana, Mildon, while F. Bailey scored a try ana kicked a penalty goal for West. Outstanding players for East were Barrell, R. Chase, Hekenui, Haitana, E. Chase, Hencry, Wereta, Gregory. Prominent players for West were Steedman, Bremner, O'Hanlon. The teams were as follows:—West. C. O’Hanlon, F. Bailey, Hollis, King, Steedman, J. Bremner, Raukawu, Reeves, Howie, Nicholson, Leary, MeQuinn, Panting, Davies, R. BremnNr, Davis. East: D. Barrell, G. Ross, Hekenui, W. Ross, Haitana, R. Chase, Payne, Berryman, E. Chase, Potaka, Peachey, Henery, Mildon, Wereta. Gregory. Next Saturday Town will play East. Waiouru will play at Taihape in the near future.

WINIATA INDOOR RACE MEETING An indoor race meeting and games will be held in aid of the East Queen on Thursday, July 10, and patrons can look forward to a good time. Particulars are advertised. FADDY’S MARKET AND HORSE RACES A gigantic Paddy’s Market and indoor horse racing will be held in the Town Hall, Taihape, on Saturday, July 12, in aid of the Eastern Queen candidate. QUEEN CARNIVAL NOTES The indoor race carnival held in the Town Hall, Taihape, on Saturday evening in aid of the funds of the Town Queen, attracted a large number of “punters,” and although the totalisator returns were down on the previous meeting’s ’ figures, a large sum of money was raised, to say noth-

ing of the fun and excitement pervad- 1 ing the atmosphere. The winning I jockeys included Miss N. Fitzherbert,: Mrs. H. G. Hall, Mrs. D. Broome, Mrs. ' Ross. Miss Nan Donaldson, Miss N. Ward, Mr. H. Bowater. The successful jockeys received a box of choco- ! lates while the owners of the winning/ horses were presented with a pair of, socks each, the successful horse own- ' ers being J.
