NEWS FROM TAIHAPE

RUGBY MATCH. A Rugby match between country teams representing the eastern and western queen candidates in the patriotic carnival was played on the Oval Domain. Taihape, on Saturday and resulted in a win for east. Weather conditions were anything but favourable and the ground was very heavy. Nevertheless there was some bright play, though many of the players had not. donned the jersey for years. D. Barrell played an outstanding game for east as full-back and was always safe. By many he was considered the best back on the ground. Payne, Hekenui, Wereta and R. Chase showed glimpses of their old form. Haitana also impressed. Young players such as Peachey, Mildon and Gillett also went well in the maroon (east) pack. For west, J. Bremner, R. Bremner, Steedman. Mortland. Holmes, Bond, Reeves and Howie caught the eye. The half-time score was 3-3. The final score was East 17, West 6. The teams were as follows:—Fast (maroon): Barrell, Haitana, Ross, Wereta, R. Chase, Payne, Hekenui, Kot.ua, E. Chase, H. PRESENTATION TO MRS. A. MACK A large number of members of the Ladies’ Guild, Mothers’ Union and other departments of St. Margaret’s Church met at the vicarage last Friday evening to bid farewell to Mrs. A. Mack, who for 21 years has been associated with the Parish Church and has taken a keen interest in all its affairs. The first part of the evening was spent in competitions, games, and the rendering of musical items. After supper, the vicar, on behalf of her many friends, presented the guest of the evening with a beautiful handbag as a token of their esteem and respect. The vicar, in the course of his remarks, recounted all the ways Mrs. Mack had helped St. Margaret’s Church during the many years she had resided in Taihape, and thanked her on behalf of the church for her loyal and sympathetic assistance. "We wish you and Mr. Mack every happiness in your new sphere in Wellington, the vicar concluded, “what is our loss is a. .Wellington parish’s gain.”

Mr. W. F. Hill, people's warden, endorsed the vicar’s remarks, and added that Mrs. Mack had helped in every sphere of activity in support of the parish and would be sadly missed. Mr. A. H. Barnes, synodsman. was also present. Mrs. Mack feelingly responded. TAIHAPE INDOOR RACING CARNIVAL. “Punters” from all parts of the district were present at the indoor race meeting held in the Town Hail. Taihape, on Saturday evening in aici of the Town Queen candidate in the carnival being held to raise funds for patriotic purposes. The crush round the enclosure was so great, that it was almost impossible to move. The principal event, the Citizens’ Cup, (presented by H. D. Bond) was won by D. Broome's Hess (Spitflre-Messer-schmitt) ridden by Mrs. Broome. The cup was presented to Mr. Broome at the conclusion of the meeting, the winner being congratulated on his success by Mr. C. A. McLaren, chairman of the Town Queen Committee. Mr. McLaren also commented on the efficient way the meeting was run. in responding, Mr. Broome said he was pleased to receive the cup. He paid a tribute to the jockey. Included in the programme was a race for gentlemen riders, the winning jockey being H. Bowater, who was a hot favourite. The winner of each event was as follows: Achilles Handicap: E. Lourie’s Starvation (Tinopener—Use). Ajax Trial: D. Broome's Hess (Spitlire—Messerschmitt). Exeter Plate: N. G. Vickers' Prime Quality (Good Grass—Top Dress). King George Handicap: F. Fisher's Regret (Baseball —Existence). Queen Elizabeth Handicap: D. McCarthy’s Petrol (Licence —Coupon). Princess Margaret Handicap: D. Broome’s Hess. Citizens’ Cup: D. Broome’s Hess. Gentleman Riders: H. Bowater 1.

The successful jockeys included Mrs. Ross, Miss Rickman, Miss Lourie, Mrs. Broome and H. Bowater.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR I ATE lINIA BEATRICE EMERSON.

A memorial service for the late Vinia Beatrice Emerson was held in the Parish Church last 'Saturday afternoon. There was a splendid attendance oi friends, showing how esteemed the late Mrs. Emerson was in the district. The choir assisted in the service and Mrs. Holmes was at the organ. The service opened with the singing of the hymn, "O Strength and Stay,” and was followed by prayers, lesson and psalm. The vicar, during the course of his address, said that the late Mrs. Emerson had always been dear in the hearts of her friends and to-day we were gathered together to show before God, how deep that friendship had been and to give thanks for her beautiful life. Death always makes those who are left very sad —as it made the disciples of old when they knew their Master had died. They were broken-hearted. Then Jesus appeared and they were full of joy and hope. There was life beyond the grave. That is the sure hope of the Christian —Jesus is alive! As He lives, so shall those who live and die in His faith. "The late Mrs. Emerson was a good, kindly Christian woman, and we honour her memory,” added the vicar. TAIHAI’E LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. FLAG FIVE HUNDRED. Fifteen tables were occupied at the weekly flag five hundred evening held on Friday in aid of patriotic funds. The prize-winners were Mesdames Reardon, W. A. Smith, Bailey, O’Keefe. The prizes were donated by Messrs. Fookes, Deal, and Loader. F. Fisher figured in the prize-list at the two previous flag five hundred evenings and also won the euchre prize.
