MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

INSTALLATION OF MAYOR LAST NIGHT'S MEETING (0.C.) Marton, May 28. The first meeting of the Marton Borough Council since the municipal elections was held last night, when councillors were installed into office and signed the declarations calling upon them to promise faithfully and impartially and to the best of their skill and .judgment to exercise the powers and authorities invested in them. The Mayor. Mr. F. Purnell, was installed into office for the tenth time. Installing the Mayor with the chain of office, Cr. Gregory congratulated Mr. Purnell on being re-elected for a further term. Cr. G. B. Gregory was re-elected deputy-Mayor. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell), Crs. K. H. Fowler, G. B. Gregory, T. E. Barton. K. A. Williams, A. J. B. Sicely, W. B. Winchcombe, W. J. Mogridge. The Mayor welcomed councillors and wished them a successful terra of office. He said it was a personal triumph for Cr. Fowler to have topped the poll at the recent elections.

Hon. secretary Marton D. H. School Committee wrote asking council to give attention to the footpaths on Willis Street, stating that this street is used as a short-cut to the school and is dangerous proceeding to and from school, also calling attention to the condition of the footpaths at the school recently tar-sealed and stating that the surface in places is stony and required further attention.—Both matters were referred to the Works Committee and borough .foreman. Chairman of the Lake County Council wrote asking council's support to a resolution asking the Government to bring about the immediate cessation of the forty-hour week, together with its regulations seriously retarding the war effort.-—The council agreed with the sentiments expressed, but felt they could not pass the resolution because it was a political matter. Secretary A. and P. Association wrote thanking the council for the free use of the Civic Theatre for the last patriotic ball and requesting that the same concession be extended to the committee in connection with a patriotic ball to be held on July 2, 1941.—The council decided to offer the hall for a charge of f 5. Committees Appointed The following committees were appointed:— Works: Crs. Barton (chairman), Fowler and Mogridge. Parks: Cr. Winchcombe. Finance and Gas: Crs. Gregory (chairman), Howard, Williams and Sicely. Library: Crs. Gregory and Williams. Fire Brigade and Baths; Crs. Mogridge (chairman), Winchcombe and Fowler.
