NO RELIEF IN STOCKING SHORTAGE

POSITION IN WANGANUI ECONOMIES PRACTISED While there is not the rush for silk stockings which, was evident a fewmonths ago, the continued shortage is still a problem for the Wanganui women. The position has changed little in the last few months, and although some small stocks are held, the purchaser who can obtain the correct size, style and shade is regarded as extremely lucky. Where supplies are available, the ruling prices strain the purse strings of the average girl or woman.

Many women are making their old pairs of stockings last longer, and repair departments in the city are exceedingly busy. Several New Zealand factories are working at high pressure, but there is little possibility of coping with the demand. New con signments come in periodically, and regular customers are able to replenish their stocks. Others have to get along the best they can. During the summer months many girls overcame the difficulty by wearing no stockings, but now that the winter is here, the stockingless vogue is not so popular. Lisle stocking’s have found more supporters, but here again supplies are not sufficient. The official figure for imports of stockings for the year ended March 31 was £66,613, compared with £162,748 in the previous year.
