NEW AIRSCREW

CALLED A “CONTRAPROP’’ (Rood. 8.30 p.m) London. May 13. The Daily Telegraph’s aviation correspondent says that bench and flight tests have been made of a “contraprop” or a coaxial, oppositely-rotating airscrew with controllable pitch blades. It is contended it will considerably imnrove the efficiency of aircraft. A contraprop can be visualised as two airscrews close together, mounted on two shafts, one running inside the other and turning in the opj osite direction. It possesses many advantages. The diameter of the airscrew is reduced, for which reason undercarriage design problems are reduced, especially with tricycle undercarriages. In addition, the airscrew’s pull is true, not inducing the plane to pull to right or left when taking off. It also gives planes greater manoeuvrability in the air.—U.P.A.
