RATEPAYERS’ INTERESTS

Sir.—On looking over some city rate figures, in 1932-3 the rate struck was 91d. the total for the year was under £90.000. It has been soaring all the way ever since, and has reached the huge sum of £130.000. up to £4OOOO rise these last two years. There are reasons which may have called for a rise, but such a great extent as shown above. I am surprised at the council going in for such heavy expenditure in these precarious times,

with a war on, and no knowing how it will end. Our Premier and Minister of Finance are both advocating econonly; local bodies should take notice. Britain is talking taxation in billions, not millions, this time, don't forget! There are Jean times ahead, win or lose, and rates should be gradually reduced for some years to come. We have had one experience and the next is not likely to prove any better. Ratepayers have their chance on Saturday to vote for candidates who will study economy and their pockets, with more consideration. Ratepayers are looked upon as an easy thing to exploit at all times by some t councils. This should not be, and it behoves them to look after their own interest better in the future than in the past, if they expect to obtain relief from the crushing burden of rates. As one councillor expressed it, over a year ago, in public print, there never was a time when a live ratepayers’ association was required, than at present.— I am, etc., “RATEPAYER."
