WAIMARINO SHOW

NEXT SATURDAY’S EVENT All indications point to the Waimarino Show at Raetihi next Saturday being the success which should reward the thoroughness of the preparatory arrangements made. The spectacular events should satisfy the most discriminating patrons. Many prominent riders with recent successes will be competing in the horse events. Foremost among these will be Mr. T. D. Baker (whose High Command won the open hunters’ competition at Makirikiri last Saturday), Mrs. L. F. Strange (whose mounts carried off the main prizes at the Parapara sports and also the Ohura Show) and Mr. and Mrs. Graham Shaw (whose horses won the major competitions at the Karioi sports). Entries in the axemen’s events are satisfactory and those who cannot resist the sight of axes vying with each other in biting into wood and causing the large chips to fly should not miss the wood chopping competitions at the Waimarino Show. The winner of the majority of'the chopping events at Makirikiri last week (E. V. Lovell) will be competing and with him will be contestants whose names and deeds are well known. The steer riding event at Raetihi has earned a reputation for its ability to provide thrills and entertainment for the crowd. This popular event is timed for 3 p.m. During the lunch hour the boys’ calf riding will be held. This event is becoming increasingly popular and is threatening to outdo the major events in its appeal to the spectators. The agility of both calf and rider, combined with the humorous incidents invariably provided, seem to have a special attraction of their own. Just before 2 p.m. the stock parade will be held and this is to be followed by a parade of the district Home Guard led by the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band. The band will comprise more than 16 players. It is confidently anticipated that the display of flowers and vegetables will reflect the outstanding productivity of Waimarino soil, while the home industries section can be expected to reach its accustomed standard of excellence. Entries in the live stock section arc about the same in number as in previous years, but the committee is disappointed that farmers of the district have not assisted them by improving this important department of the show. The grounds are in excellent con-, dition and their gala appearance will be supplemented by a strong representation of sideshows to cater for all tastes in entertainment. Soldiers in uniform are to be admitted free to the Showgrounds and the committee in charge expects a strong contingent of some 600 men from the Waiouru Military Camp. In the evening the annual show dance is to take place in the Druids' Hall, while the Drill Hall will be the scene of a monster boxing carnival, in which leaders of the boxing art from Waiouru Camp and Wanganui will contest for the honours.
