ON HAWERA TRACKS

EASY PACE WORK There was not a great deal of important work performed on the Hawera tracks on Tuesday morning. The horses raced at Opunake on Saturday were relegated to easy pace work. Two winners on Saturday are to race at Woodville, Filbert and Southern Blood, and are to be ridden by W. Thomson and C. Cole respectively. Both can be considered improved by their racing and likely to give a good account of themselves. Filbert has performed well on this track previously. Conditions for training operations were perfect, and on the outside of the course proper with the trestles 35 feet out Ring Chief (D. Ryan) galloped three furlongs without being bustled in 38 3-ssec. Ring Chief appears in great order and will attract attention at his next outing. Another Hawera two-year-old who appears likely to engage special attention before the season closes is Battle Dress (N. Holland), who finished attractively to beat High Tone (Thomson) at the end of a three furlong sprint in 37Isec. Student Prince (N. Holland) is shaking off his stiltiness and working more freely than for some time. Foot trouble rather than muscular soreness has been affecting Student Prince, and he strode out to register the finishing half mile in 52sec. Friesland was given exercise on the lead, and it is understood that his visit to the Waikato fixture is unlikely. On the outside of the course Ra Renee (W. Thomson) finished in front of Miss Phaleron (J. Graham) in a sprint over two furlongs covered in 24 3-ssec. Ra Renee is a promising youngster by Colossus from a mare by The Ace. The handsome Croupier mare Tavoy (Mills) is being kept up to the collar and sprinted four furlongs on the plough in 49 3-ssec. Vai Pere (N. Holland), who ran prominently on Saturday while his condition lasted, galloped half a mile comfortably on the plough in 51 4-5 sec. Night Ray, after a short spell, has resumed track work. Filbert and Stencil were given half pace work. An addition to H. Mills’ stable is Ramiah, who has been out for a protracted spell. Surveyor-General, whose poor display at Opunake was attributable to track conditions, was given easy exercise ridden by his trainer. Dick Brough. Notium, as jaunty as ever, did serviceable pace work and, properly placed, should again run prominently. Star Mark did light work and Royal Star 11. is rounding into shape. S. McGreal is busily engaged handling and breaking in youngsters. They include high-bred ones including a bay filly by Man’s Pal from Halo, a chestnut filly by Portofino—Golden Isa, a bay colt by Spiral from Imposture, and a Tiderace colt from Curtsey. The foregoing were purchased by Mr. Gavin, Sydney, who is likely to race two of his horses in the Dominion. Mr. J. B. Fletcher, owner of Royal Star IL, has a bay filly by Theio from Mint Bell, the latter a half sister to Rhodesian. A chestnut colt by Plato from Royal Shadow belonging to Mr. E. Anderson, and a two-year-old by Vaals from Hushing, the property of Mr. Fletcher, completes an attractively bred series of young horses.
