DUNEDIN CUP

Royal Chief’s Big Weight i GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED AUTUMN MEETING TO-DAY i REVIEW OF PROSPECTS I The autumn meeting of the Dun- j edin Jockey Club will be held to-day and Saturday. The whole programme is varied and interesting, and the recent meetings at Gore and Winton may have a bearing on some of the results. The Heid in the Dunedin Cup is the best for several years, but there is always liable to be an upset in this race. For instance. Sparkle won last year, paying a great dividend. Royal Chief is the topweight this year and he will have to be at his very best to win with 10.4 in the saddle. Yet he is fancied in some quarters, but his stablemate. Wardress, reads a better proposition. The mile and a-half journey may be too far for Trench Fight, the same being said of Schoolgirl, though she is very fit at present and the fact that she ran a good sixth in the Wellington Cup should not be lost sight of. Mona's Song, Doubleack and Sparkle have been racing well at the "smalls,” and Wild Career, winner of the President’s Handicap at Gore, has only been out of a place three times this season. Straightdell won the Otago Handicap at the last Dunedin meeting, but has not done much racing since. The Wrecker has no form this season • to commend him. but Iceland Spar will command attention, as he can stay. The best performance of the bottom weight. Happy Night, this season was his win in the Farewell Handicap (104 furlongs) at the December meeting of the Dunedin Club. Those sought after to-day may be Wardress, Winning Rival, Schoolgirl and Royal Chief. The "second leg.” the Publicans’ Handicap, has drawn a nice field of ten, which includes such good performers as Hearth. Doria, Lord Nuffield, Rebel Mate, Spanish Lad, Craiglea and Pleading. The classic on the card, the Champagne Stakes, has drawn a nice field

of youngsters, in which Bird of Prey. Palfrey, Silver Lily , Dash o' Dublin and Willow Wood may be prominent. The first race is timed to start at 12.30 and the totalisator will operate on the win-and-place system. The following should be well supported in engagements to-day:— Warrington Hurdles.—Combat, Flagman, Araboa. Trial Handicap.—Kurawhi, Lady Derby, Kohara. Berwick Handicap.—Royal Chorus, Lord Midas. King Gustavo. Publicans’ Handicap.—Lord Nuffield. Pleading, Doria. Dunedin Cup.—Schoolgirl, Winning Rival, Wardress. Champagne Stakes.—Bird of Prey Palfrey, Silver Lily.
