The small Canadian Volunteer Reserve destroyers picked up 860 persons from t he sinking Arandora Star. In offensive warfare they have given the German U-boats every reason to treat the Canadian Navy with, respect. At the same time 420 officers and officer-candidates of the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve are spread over the British Fleet, and it is almost impossible for the British Navy to be in action without Canadians having some part. Five Canadian officers were serving on H.M.S. Forfar when she was sunk, and a leading Canadian scientist was a casualty in H.M.S. Ajax in a Mediterranean battle four months ago. The Canadian Navy is also co-operating in the Western Atlantic and the West. Indies and is greatly helping in the movement, of merchant shipping across the Atlantic.
