LADIES AT BOWLS SUCCESSFUL ALL-DAY TOURNEY (Own Correspondent.) Beautiful weather prevailed for Ladies’ Day on the Marton bowling green on Wednesday afternoon and there was a good attendance of ladies and members. All the players took a part in a roll-up to "kitty,” Miss Ferens being the winner. A dainty afternon tea was provided by the club. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed the afternons sport. Two rinks from Marton will visit Feilding on Saturday afternoon to take pare in the Oroua Bowling Club’s gala day. The rinks are: —Miles, Petrie, Callan, Barton; Denbow, tirst-class combination and after the During the week-end seven rinks wiil visit Bulls to take part in a fullrink tournament. The semi-final of the full-rink championship of the Marton Club will be played on Saturday afternoon between the following rinks:— Cairncross, Healy, Hempieman, Goebel v. Morris, Freeth, Mclndoe, Caverhill. Cairneross, Nuttall, Morrison, Hawkins v. Jolley, Gibbs, Kilpatrick, Tilley. HOME GUARD At a meeting of the Home Guard recently, seven appointments were made. Mr. A. C. Birch is to be liaison otneer, Mr. F. J. Soler intelligence officer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair transport officer, Mr. Wilson platoon officer at Marton Junction. Mr. A. P. Howard platoon officer tor Greatford, Mr. H. G. Stewart platoon officer for Makahau, and Mr. R. W. Turner is to be officer commanding the Marton Company. On Tuesday night another class for n.c.o.’s was neid on Marton Park, the instructing officer being Sergeant-Major C. Calkin. PRE-WEDDING PARTY Prior to their marriage, Miss Frances Poppe and Mr. Denis Stantiall (who leaves for camp shortly), were entertained at Mr. H. T. Whale’s residence, Cliff Line, Marton, at a pre-wedding party. There were about 50 guests present. Cards and dancing were enjoyed during the evening. Mr. A. Grade made a presentation of a tilled wallet to M/. Stantiall, expressing a wish that it would be utilises xin purenasing kitchen utensils. Prizes in the progressive euchre were won by Mrs. S. Stantiall and Mr. M. Brightwell, while the consolation awards w'ent to Mrs. H. T. Whale and Mr. Colin Whale. Music for the dancing was played by Mr. George Franke. A dainty supper was dispensed by the ladies, unde/ the supervision pi Miss Gladys Whale. Mr. Stantiall suitably replied, thanking the organisers for the enjoyable evening and the useful gift. PARADE OF MARTON BAND. To-morrow evening (Friday), the Marton Municipal Band will parade through Broadw'ay at 7 o’clock and later in the evening render a programme of music from the Post Office corner. The Marton Band is now a first-class combination and after the favourable reception it received following Sunday night’s open-air concert in the park, it is expected that the band will be seen more often in public outings. Mr. A. E. S. Crozier, who has been invaluable to the band, will as usual, act as conductor.
