MARTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

I COMMITTEE VACANCIES ROLL NUMBERS REPORTED (Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Feb. 12. There is a possibility that at the next meeting of the Marton District High School Committee there will be two vacancies to fill. The recent death of Mr. R. Rivers leaves one gap and the resignation of Mr. A. D. • Barr, who is now in the Air Force, is expected to be before the committee next time it meets. Although nothing definite was decided at last night’s meeting, the matter will be discussed next month and more than likely there will be an election. Already the committee has undergone one change this year. Mr. A. S. Blackledge resigned to take up a position with the Air Force and the vacancy was filled by Mr. D. Conway. The monthly meeting of the committee was held last night, Mr. J. F. R. Wallace presiding over Messrs. L. Williams, C. Preece, G. Grey, D. Conway, G. L. Thomas (secretary), and Mr. A. W. Tucker (headmaster). An apology was received from Mr. A. Gracie. The visiting committee reported that the grounds were m satisfactory order. Messrs. Wallace and Conway ■were appointed a visiting committee for the current month. The headmaster intimated that the school sports will be held in the school ground next week, probably Friday, February 21, at 1 p.m. Parents and friends, he said, would be welcome. The Wanganui Education Board advised that Mr. K. B. Gregory had been appointed probationary assistant to the school, Miss D. M. Stewart relieving secondary assistant, and Miss T. C. Hammond relieving assistant in the primary department. Mr. Tucker said the relieving teachers had filled the vacancies caused by the resignations of Mrs. Fromm and Miss Wilkinson. Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster reported that the school opened on February 4 with a somewhat larger roll in the primary and a slightly smaller roll in the secondary. Details were: Primary, roll 173 (boys), 152 (girls), total 325; average attendance, 299; percentage of attendance, 92. Secondary, 48 (boys), 70 (grils), total 118; average attendance, 115; percentage of attendance, 97. “It is hoped," said Mr. Tucker, “that any other intending secondary pupils will enrol at once, as the staffing depends on the numbers in the first month. Unless the numbers reach 121 a reduction in staff will ensue."
