THE CONTRACTING FIRMS The architects were Messrs. R. and W. Thorrold-Jaggard, of Palmerston North. The building contractor, Mr. T. J. McElwaine, of Marton, has been established for 31 years. He erected the original yards for the New Zealand farmers’ Co-operative Company in 1919. He has built 30 Government houses and is at present engaged in building further State houses. He employs a staff of 30, which has given him loyal co-operation in all his undertakings. Mr. McElwaine ha., an up-to-date timber yard and joinery factory. Some of the largest residences and business premises in Marton are the work of the firm.

The contractor for the plumbing was Todd’s Plumbing Works, Marton. Mr. Todd took over his late father’s business and has kept in the van of progress and always welcomes any opportunity of submitting any suggestions for the installation of modern and exclusive plumbing fixtures.

The electrical installation was carried out by Mr. A. L. Williams, of Marton. Mr. Williams has an excellent reputation for high quality workmanship. and his outlook is progressive and enterprising. Harvey and Calkin, Marton, the painting contractors, have established a very sound business and enjoy a great reputation for excellent workmanship in all branches of the trade.

S. H. Hunt and Son, who were the brickwork contractors, have been established for 35 years. Included in their many contracts are the following: N.Z. Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company, Limited, Nga Tawa School and Chapel, Members’ Stand, Marton Racecourse, Vacuum Oil Company (Taihape), Ben Nevis Hotel (Turakina), Gretna Hotel (Taihape). Under the supervision of Mr. James Hunt, plastering work was done on Ward Motors (Marton). Cascade Brewery (Taihape), and Rest Room (Bulls). The firm enjoys a sound reputation for skilled craftsmanship.
