ANNUAL SHEEP TREK
EXODUS FROM EAST COAST ROTORUA. Feb. 7. Within the first 10 days of February, over 48,000 sheep will be offered for sale throughout the Bay of Plenty, the largest, sales being at Whakatane and Opoliki. For some weeks past all roads leading from Gisborne and the East Coast have been busy with sheep arriving, not only for sales in the district, but also passing through to the Waikato. It is estimated this year that at least 200,000 breeding ewes, mostly from the East Coast, will be absorbed in the Waikato. The experience of one motorist between Opotiki and Whakatane is typical. In 40 miles he met 11 mobs averaging about 3000. It. is usually reckoned by drovers that the journey from Gisborne to Te Puke, one of the stock sale centres of the Bay of Plenty, takes eight weeks. In the past few sheep have been on the road for the Waikato before the New Year, but in response to requests from buyers the annual trek has been earlier this season.
