MAKE THESE LAST LONGER Bare legs, painted legs—covered knee-high with “roll your owns,” are overseas fashion trends unlikely to be adopted by Sydney women (according to a Sydney correspondent). Deep rooted preference for existing stocking vogue is not false modesty, but further evidence of “dress sense" 'which places Australian women among best dressed in the world. The clinging line of a silk stocking, fully fashioned.' to flatter from knee to ankle, is too much a part of an attractive appearance, they claim, to be cast aside for any whimsical mode. Then, too, even most shapely legs can rarely stand a close-up view for blemishes, freckles, down encouraged by the sun, must all be taken into account. Authorities were commenting on the bare-knee fashion forecast for English women for all occasions following the banning of silk stockings. The mode originated in America as a novelty for wear with “campus" or sports clothes. Of wool, the stockings have elastic tops, which clip just below the knee. Skirts swing above the knee. American following I was, however, small. | Pure silk stockings and underwear have been unobtainable in Britain since December 1, all available silk being diverted to the making of barrage balloons and parachutes. Knee-length, rolled-top woollen stockings are being introduced by Yorkshire fashion experts, it is reported. A Sydney store which recently introduced a knee-length silk stocking found little sales interest, and discontinued the line. The fashion is one of necessity in England, Sydney hosiery manufacturers point out. At present there is no likelihod of an acute shortage of silk and artificial silk hosiery here, as is anounced in New Zealand. Rayon and pure silk mixture, however, is already replacing pure silk in popular lines retaling in Sydney stores at 5s lid and less. A seasonal hint from a store hosiery buyer is; “Don’t, if you were lucky enough to be given six or eight pairs of stockings for Christmas, put them by for future use. Launder them at once and place on special stocking hanger. Silk stockings will not store indefinitely.” Other tips to make your stockings last longer are:— Always wash new hosiery before wearing. Don rubber gloves to obviate “snags” from sharp fingernails and chipped polish. Rinse in lukewarm water two or three times to make sure that all suds are removed. Squeeze, not ring, and hang to dry by toes in shade, where there is no danger of the stocking blowing against fence, wall, or catching on rough pegs. Remove rings, watches, bracelet, before taking stockings on or off.
