CHRISTMAS AT PATEA
STREET CARNIVAL TO BE HELD
At a meeting of Patea retailers held recently it was decided to hold a street carnival on Christmas Eve. A free picture show will be given for the children from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. This will enable the parents to do their shopping unhampered by the children. At nine o’clock-there will be a cash gift for every child at the triangle. From 7 o’clock till 10 three men will walk the .(.reets. The lucky persons to identify them will be given a guinea prize. These men will be dressed as follows: Sergeant-Major X in mufti wearing a badge will walk the street from 7 to 8. Royal Marine Y in mufti wearing a badge will appear from 8 to 9 p.m., and Aircraftsman Z also in mufti wearing a badgewill 0 pear from 9 to 10 p.m. The Patea Band will be in attendance and will stage a burlesque display. The committee are quite certain that ; carnival will surpass any held m Patea previously. CARLYLE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE On Thursday afternoon a record attendance marked this month’s meeting of the Carlyle Women’s Institute which was held at the residence of Mrs J. Jackson. During the afternoon a short programme was presented, those taking part Mrs. A. Fairweather, a vocal solo; Mrs. F. Fitzsimmons, a pianoforte solo; a short sketch was presented by Mesdames A. Mercer and R. Fairweather. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames J. Jackson, H. Moore and F. Fitzsimmons.
Competitions resulted as follows: Best Christmas novelty, Mrs. R. Burgess 1, Mrs. F. Fitzsimmons 2, and Mrs. H. Peacocke 3. Best knitted article, Mrs. F. Fitzsimmons 1.
