WILL BE EIGHTY-FOUR ON SATURDAY
MR. FRED IRESON JONES OLDEST WHITE MAN BORN IN v WANGANUI 1 Mr. Fred I. Jones, who will be 84 on Saturday, has the distinction of being the oldest white man born in Wanganui. He was born in the infant settlement in 1856. His parents came to New Zealand in 1856. Mr. Jones vividly remembers the Rutland and York stockades, when they were landmarks of the town. He is a former member of the Hawera Borough Council, and is a member of the Wanganui Bowling Club. Mr. Jones’ father, the late Mr. H. I. Jones, was one of the pioneers who played his part in defending the town in the troublesome times. He also established the firm of H. 1. Jones and Son. Mr. Jones, senior, was a great friend of the late Rev. Richard Taylor, one of the first missionaries on this part of the coast.
