KEEN COMPETITION FOR BEEF WETHERS AT HIGHEST PRICE SINCE 1923 [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Aug. 14. An average yarding of good-quality ox beef sold under keen competition at Westfield, values improving on last, week’s rates. Cows sold freely at ruling quotations. Extra choice ox beef sold at 42s per 1001 b., choice and prime 39s to 41s, secondary and plain 35s to 38s. Extra prime cow and heifer 33s to 375, choice and prime 30s to 325, ordinary cow beef 27s to 295; extra heavy prime steers £lB to £2O, heavy £l5 17s 6d to £l7 ss, medium £l3 15s to £l5 15s, light £ll to £l3 10s, small and unfinished £lO to £lO 15s; extra heavy prime cows and heifers £l2 to £l5, heavy £lO to £ll 10s, lighter £8 to £9, others £5 10s to £7. ’ Although the calf yarding was a larger one, good quality vealers were in short supply. Competition was keen and values were fully firm. Runners £5 to £lO 12s 6d, heavy vealers £7 to £8 3s, medium £5 15s to £6 15s, light £4 to £5 10s, small £1 to £3 10s, unfinished and bucket fed £1 5s to £2, bobby calves 5s to 18s.

In pigs the demand was not so keen for an increased offering, and all values were lower. Choppers £3 to £4 4s, heavy baconers £4 7s to £4 15s, medium £4 to £4 4s, light £3 14s to £3 18s, heavy porkers £3 13s to £3 17s. medium £3 2s to £3 9s, light £2 14s to £2 17s, small and unfinished £2 Ss to £2 13s, stores £2 7s to £2 16s, slips £1 14s to £2, weaners £1 8s to £1 12s.

The quality of the small sheep yarding; was outstanding. Competition was keen and values rose, wethers making to £3, the highest at Westfield since 1923. Extra heavy prime wethers £2 14s to £3, heavy £2 10s to £2 13s, medium £2 6s to £8 9s, light £2 Is to £2 ss, plain and unfinished £1 10s to £1 18s; extra heavy prime young and maiden ewes £2 to £2 7s, heavy £1 16s' to £1 19s, lighter £1 10s to £1 14s, plain and aged £1 5s to £1 Bs, others 5s to £l.

An average entry of lambs sold under keen competition at advanced rates. Extra heavy prime lambs 36s to 40s, heavy 32s to 345, medium 28s to 30s, lighter 25s to 275, light 22s to 245, small and plain 18s to 21s.
