WAITOTARA VALLEY NEWS

FAREWELL TO SOLDIERS On the occasion of Arbor Day the pupils of the Orangimea School took the opportunity to farewell two old boys of the school, Messrs D. and S. Leith, who are members of the Third Echelon. During the morning the guests and their friends were entertained by the pupils, and were the recipients of presentations.

To commemorate the occasion trees were planted by the departing soldiers, after which Mr. Ranginui Kauika addressed the pupils on New Zealand native trees.

The chairman of the School Committee, Mr. R. J. Leith, and the headteacher, Mr. E. C. Anderson, spoke of the traditions of the school and the need for sacrifices in the cause of freedom, and on behalf of the parents and children respectively wished “the old boys” a safe return. Private D. Leith happily replied.
