OBITUARY

E. W. GRIFFITHS The death has occurred suddenly at Ohakune of Mr. Ethelbert Whitney Griffiths, a well-known figure in Auckland tennis circles, at the age of 54. Born in Blenheim, he was the youngest son of Mr. C. J. W. Griffiths, who was a grand master of the Masonic order in New Zealand. He was educated at Nelson College and married in New Plymouth, where he was well known. Mr. Griffiths had a reputation in Auckland both as a tennis executive and player. As a player Mr. Griffiths’ most notable success was the winning of the New Zealand mixed doubles championship with Miss Marjorie Macfarlane. He shared success in the Auckland doubles championship four times between 1921 and 1931, and in 1925 won the Auckland singles title. Besides tennis, he took a keen interest in badminton and golf. At one time a member of the Parnell Badminton Club, he was an Auckland and New Zealand doubles champion. Mr. Griffiths was for many years connected with egg and butter marketing and when his business was absorbed by Turners and Growers, Limited, he was appointed as the firm’s representative in Ohakune. MR. H. A. DARGAVILLE The death has occurred suddenly of Mr. Harold Anderson, Dargaville, of Takutai Street, Parnell, at the age of 51. Mr. Dargaville, who was a director of Arthur H. Natnan, Limited, was well known in Auckland business and yachting circles. He was a son of the late Mr. J. M. Dargaville, who is remembered as one of the chief pioneers of the timber and kauri gum industries in the Northern Wairoa district. He is survived by his wife and two young children. MR. G. HAYWARD The death has occurred at Ashhurst of Mr. G. Hayward, an old Hamilton resident, at the age of 85. Mr. Hayward was born in Worcestershire, England. He married in 1875 and five years later left with his family for New Zealand in the sailing ship Waimea, landing at Wellington. For 12 years, he was in the employ of the Railway Department, and after his retirement he lived in Frankton for a number of years before leaving for Ashhurst about eight years ago. Mrs. Hayward died in 1937, and Mr. Hayward returned to Frankton. He is survived by four sons and three daughters.
