CLARION CALL’S TRIUMPH

SECOND GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLES VICTORY C.J.C. CARNIVAL MEETING OPENS Taking the lead at a relatively early stage in the long journey, Clarion Call yesterday scored his second success in the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton, registering a comfortable victory. Several of the eleven contestants were casualties, included among their number being the hot favourite Padishah, who broke down after covering more than two miles, at which stage he was well out of the contest. The Winter Cup, the big flat event of the opening day of the C.J.C. winter meeting, was won by the well-backed Lady Tinkle, ridden by last season's leading horseman, W. J. Broughton. Though most of the winners were fancied candidates, Dividend, Doria and La Boca were at long odds for their respective successes.
