OBITUARY

MR. M. S. BROWN The death has occurred after a short illness, of Mr. Matthew Stoddart Brown, who for about 60 years had been a member of the legal profession of Christchurch. Mr. Brown was born at Port Levy, and attended' school in Lyttelton. He had Jed a very active life up to the time of his illness a fortnight ago. He was a leading figure in the Masonic fraternity and was a Past District Grand Master. Mr. Brown leaves a widow and two daughters living in Christchurch, and a son is farming at Omihi.

MR. H. E. R. L. WILY The death has occurred at his residence, The Falls, Mauku, of Mr. Henry Evan Robert Luxmore Wily, a well-known New Zealand author and farmer. Mr. Wily, besides publishing two historical books recently, had also, over a long period of years, written articles for many newspapers. Born in England, Mr. Wily came to New. Zealand with his parents when five years of age, his father being the late Major H. W. Wily. The family settled at Waiuku and Mr. Wily had lived there ever since. An energetic worker, he had broken in four farms, aggregating some 2000 acres, within a radius of 12 miles of his home. Mr. Wily is survived by his wife and son. There are three grandchildren.

MR. W. E. GOFFE A prominent, student of the Maori people, a collector of native relics and an authority on the Maori language, Mr. William Edward Goffe, of Gisborne. died after a short illness, aged 77. He was born in Paihia, Bay of Islands. In the days of the early Seddon Government he was appointed the first permanent interpreter and translator to Parliament and in 1894 became Land Purchase Officer for the Native Department. Mr. Goffe is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son, Mrs. H. P. Barrow, Tolaga Bay, Mrs. A. V. Clare, Gisborne. Mrs. A. de Greenlaw. Auckland, and Mr. E. M. Goffe, Gisborne.

MR. SAMUEL HOLMES The death on August 4, at the age ot 76 years, removed another of North Otago's pioneers, Mr. Samuel Holmes, of Queen's Flat, Ngapara. Mr. Holmes was born in Donegal, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of seven years. For years he was a resident of the Hilderthorpe district, where in 1892 he married a daughter of the late Mr. W. Copland, of Southland. Later he removed to Queen’s Flat. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Mr. Sam Holmes (Auckland) and Mr. Tom Holmes (Queen’s Flat), and fouldaughters, Mesdames D. B. Glen (Peebles), A. Murdoch (Mayfield), W. Smith (Kirwee) and G. Murdoch (Mayfield). Mrs. E. Emmett (Oamaru) is a sister.
