ARGENTINE BUTTER

EXPANSION OF EXPORTS Reports from London indicate that the Argentine butter export trade has expanded rapidly. In the first quarter of this year shipments totalled 159,925 cases, of which the United Kingdom took 127,144 cases. In the corresponding period of 1939 exports were 89,435 cases, while in 1938 the total was only 26,987 cases, according to the London Chamber of Commerce Journal. As a result of the Ottawa Agreement and the liberal import quoin given to Denmark, a once-flourishing branch of Argentine’s export trade had dwindled almost to extinction, but in consequence of the German occupation of Denmark, it is expected that there will be development of tne Argentine dairy industry, especially as there is still some margin for an increase in primary production. Butter exports from Denmark to the United Kingdom in 1938 w'ere 120,c00 metric tons, about a quarter of British requirements, against 90,000 tons from Australia. In the eight months ended February 29, 1940, the Australian butter production was 151,949 tons, compared with 133,372 tons in the corresponding period of the previous year. Total exports in the period increased by 22,723 tons. The contract for the sale of Australian butter and cheese to the United Kingdom has been renewed to? the year ending June 30, 1941. The conditions, including prices, are tne same as those in the contract which had just expired. The quantity which the United Kingdom has undertaken to purchase is 100,000 tons of butter and 20,000 tons of cheese.
